Belper Poetry Circle
This was Beth’s first group in Belper. Having belonged to poetry groups before she moved to Belper, she determined to start one here. It began in 1993, and meets in the Strutts Community every first and third Tuesday afternoon of the month. If caters for all who want to read, listen to and appreciate poetry.
The group concentrates on a subject or a poet at alternate meetings. There is an annual outing to a place connected to a poet, and also a Christmas social event. The group is now run by a small committee.
Poetry People
Began life as Belper Poetry Lovers’ Club in 1999, in response to an evening led by Beth Fender during 1998 Poetry Week. It currently meets on the third Monday of the month at 2pm via Zoom
Anyone interested in reading and/or writing poetry finds a welcome and lots of encouragement. The meetings have included workshops, finding out more about established poets, visits, visitors and themed evenings.
There is a social event, at New Year, and the group has enjoyed ‘literary’ walks. The group has run several successful poetry and music evenings in support of various causes. It has also self-published some poetry books, and produced a poetry video about Belper.
There is a group coordinator and treasurer, but members often volunteer to run an evening or help organise an event.
For information on either poetry group, contact Glen Mulliner on 01773 687257
